Justice Medal Art

Unlike some of the other prize medal designs, the Justice Medal design seemed to be an instinctive solution for those involved in the decision. After some deliberation, we concluded that Lady Justice (derived from the Roman goddess Justitia) would be difficult to improve on. Blindfolded, holding a sword in one hand and a set of scales in the other, she symbolizes the objective and equitable rendering of justice without regard to the status of those who appear before her. It is these principles of fairness and equality under law that were to be – and indeed have been – at the core of every prize recipient's acts of courage and commitment to justice.
