Neuroscience Medal Art

The Spanish neuroanatomist Santiago Ramón y Cajal, who shared the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1906 with the Italian anatomist Camillo Golgi, was a talented artist whose delicate and accurate drawings of the brain and its structures were among the first to elucidate the intricacies of the brain to scientists. The Gruber Neuroscience medal design, inspired by Cajal's early drawings, uses a beautiful illustration of Purkinje cells to honor Cajal and to celebrate the Gruber Neuroscience award.
