Laws of Life Essay Contest

May 2007 . . . High school students from four Virgin Islands public schools shared nearly $20,000 in cash awards in the territory’s seventh annual Laws of Life essay contest.

Teens from St. Croix Central High School were honored in an award ceremony and reception on May 26 at the Estate Whim Plantation Museum on St. Croix. A similar ceremony was held May 20 on St. Thomas for winning essayists from Charlotte Amalie and Ivanna Eudora Kean High Schools on St. Thomas and for ninth graders from the Julius Sprauve School on St. John.

The contest is actually several separate competitions: one for each grade level at each high school. First place garners $500, second place, $250, third, $150. There are also lesser cash awards to the teachers of the winning students as well as three honorable mention student awards of $50 each for each grade level.

The contest is a character education program designed to motivate students to think and write about their values. Introduced in the Virgin Islands in 2001, it is a joint effort between the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands and the Peter and Patricia Gruber Foundation; it is funded by the Gruber Foundation and Globalvest Management Company, L.P., an investment management firm founded by Peter Gruber.

English teachers at the schools present the essay as a writing project and then submit the top essays – without names attached – for the contest. A panel of distinguished members of the community in each island district acts as jury to choose the winning essays.
